I would like to know if someone has some way to seach an entire corpus (in this case QUMRAN) for quotes of a specific text. I want to see if 11Q5 18 is quoted somewhere throughout the QUMRAN module, but I am not sure how to do the search. Or if it is even possible. The way I have tried so far is to open a new window and enter the following search code:

[RANGE 11Q5 18] <AND>*

then open another and enter

[RANGE *] <AND> [HITS Qumran 2] [email protected]*

Which will allow me to manually scroll through the entire QUMRAN module and look for consecutive black words. But that is very time consuming, and does not show if the consecutive black words in the second window are consecutive in the first, which would be of great significance if one would like to label it as a quote.

Does anyone have a less time-consuming idea?

Hi, David, this is an excellent question!

This is a perfect example of using the INFER command - to find when one passage is similar to other passages.  To set it up, simply start with a Verse search for the source passage you want - in this case, 11Q5 18.  Then, in your second tab, search for [INFER 6 QUMRAN] (shift-command-I, or INFER from Search->Enter Command menu), and you are done!  This basically finds 6 word phrases in common with potentially 1 word difference.  Now, since 11Q5 is in QUMRAN, you'll get some duplicated results, but you can either ignore them in a custom range, or just ignore them in your mind :)

This is what it would look like:

You can immediately see some similarities in 4Q216 5 and 4Q448 1.  But, you can easily customize your INFER command to perhaps find better the quotes you are looking for; just play around with the options in the dialog you get when you enter it.
