Bishop J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) was a strong supporter of the evangelical school and a critic of Ritualism. He was a writer, pastor, and an evangelical preacher. Warmly welcomed by evangelical Christians of all denominations, his writings on the Gospels are considered by many to be the best practical, devotional, and Christ-centered commentaries EVER written!
The author did not prepare the work for scholars, but instead that the volumes were for family and private use.

Commentaries are my favorite modules in Accordance (and I own a lot of commentaries). There is no perfect set of commentaries. They each serve a different purpose. While I find many new commentaries very useful, particularly in their treatment of technical and grammatical issues, there are some old commentaries that excel in their spiritual insights. J.C. Ryle’s “Expository Thoughts on the Gospels” is an excellent example of an older commentary that will continue to be read as long as the English language survives. His insights explain the meaning of the gospel texts, but more than that, they are deeply devotional. If you need to find a reflective quote to express the meaning of a text to use in a lesson or sermon, you can hardly do better that J.C. Ryle. His writing, though dated, continues to sound fresh to modern ears. This is one of the commentaries that I always turn to when studying a gospel text. It is also excellent to use as a daily devotional. The module functions very well in Accordance and scrolls nicely with the Biblical text.
