I Believe in the Resurrection of Jesus — George Eldon Ladd / January 01, 1975
The Apostle Paul considered the resurrection of Jesus to be the cornerstone of the Christian faith. If that belief fell, the whole structure would collapse, and the missionary effort to which Paul gave his life would turn out to be in vain. But voices are heard today to suggest that the doctrine of the resurrection of Jesus cannot be believed, at least not in a literal sense, and in fact need not be believed.
With striking clarity George Ladd faces here this central issue of Christian belief. He surveys the idea of resurrection, beginning in the Old Testament, developing in the Jewish literature of New Testament times, and culminating in the radically new teaching of the raising of Jesus from the dead in the four Gospels and Paul’s letters. He confronts squarely the issues that have led persons to challenge the resurrection faith.
Ladd concludes with a ringing affirmation of the meaning of Jesus’ resurrection for the Christian. It is the firstfruits of his own resurrection at the end of time.
