A Windows PC and an iPad; the best of both worlds

Hi,

I just came across Frank's old post, Considering purchase of an iPad Using Accordance, at http://www.accordancebible.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8889&page=1entry39728.

There is a way to enjoy the best of both worlds with remote desktop software, and save on the purchase price of an iPad.

I bought iTeleport (see http://www.iteleportmobile.com/), but there are similar apps. It allows me to view my Windows computer, and control it with my iPad's keyboard and touch features. This means I can do anything on my computer with my iPad, including opening and closing and using programs, word processing, printing, anything and everything! , including running the Windows Accordance program. So, I can switch back and forth between the full Accordance program in the iTeleport app and the iOS version of Accordance. You can even have your pc screen in front of you, with your iPad in one hand, and switch between both keyboards, or between touch and the mouse; they work together seamlessly.

My computer must be turned on to use iTeleport. If it is sleeping, iTeleport can turn it on, so power usage is not an issue. At home I use iTeleport through my local home network, no internet connection required. With my Gmail ID I can access my home computer from anywhere in the world.

iTeleport, or another remote desktop app, can also save you money. First, you can get by with a 16 GB iPad, because you also have the hard drive on your pc. I also use Logos with my iTeleport screen. While I would love to own BDAG and HAL on Accordance, I already own paper editions and Logos editions of both, and I can't justify a third copy of them even at crossgrade prices. With iTeleport I can access all my pc software, including books I own on Logos. Of course I could use the Logos iOS version, but, sometimes it is better to access a certain resource in the full pc version.

If you buy an iPad, you will find that finding and using files is different than what we are used to. You will have to learn how to use Dropbox, and for Unicode you might consider my post, Installing custom fonts and keyboards on iPad - and using them in Pages at http://www.accordancebible.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12975

I also find that Textilus is a more powerful word processor than Pages

I am truly enjoying the best of both worlds.

Michel

DO you know anything about Microsoft Remote Desktop which is a free app for the ipad?? Or Teamviewer which is also free?

Hi Gordon,

I considered it among many others, including Mocha VNC Lite (free), VNC Viewer (free), Splashtop2 ($4.99), Screens VNC ($20), and iTeleport Remote Desktop View ($25).

Based on the reviews, I would have tried the free ones in this order: Mocha VNC Lite, VNC Viewer, and Microsoft Remote Desktop.

I decided on iTeleport for its security features, and because it works over wifi. I can work on my home network without any security fears. Plus, the reviews I read put iTeleport and Screens VNC at the top of the list. I guess that's why they are also the most expensive.

But go ahead and try any or all of the free ones, and report back to us.

Regards,

Michel

Teamviewer is the one that Accordance techies used to try to solve problems on my computer. I just didn't realize that there was an ipad app as well by which I could access my own pc. SO far teamviewer is the easiest to set up

Hi Gordon,

I didn't know either until very recently. I wish I had known when I bought my 32 GB iPad! For my purposes, and with one of these apps, I could have purchased a 16 GB model. Then I would have had more $ for more Accordance modules, or parts of.

Keep the reports coming about TeamViewer.

Michel,

Download Teamviewer app for free and check it out for yourself to see if you like it. Very easy to set up. Download teamviewer to your pc;download the teamviewer app to your ipad and you can try it out. Let me know how the $25 app compares!

Hi Gordon,

The most immediate and striking difference is the display quality - in iTeleport my 1920x1080 resolution appears as Retina display on my iPad, but in TeamViewer like 600x800 on a Windows 95 desktop. It does control my pc though, including printing.

I'm sorry that I don't have time to load and compare other apps. Perhaps you could solve the display issue with TeamViewer or another free app. I'm already invested with iTeleport, so I'll stick with it.

I'm sure, though, that others are still interested in TeamViewer and other apps you might try.

Regards.

I tried a quick go of Remote Desktop on my Samsung tablet connecting to my laptop out of curiosity. Easy enough, but the as the Windows app is not touch enabled the clash of interfaces is a bit jarring. Michel, are you using a keyboard (bluetooth or peripheral h.w keyboard that is) on the iPad or iTeleport helping out here ?

Thx

Hi Daniel,

My Dell Laptop is not touch enabled. I use a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse with it.

I use the iPad keyboard, with iTeleport set to touchscreen mode.

I don't have a bluetooth keyboard. I'm not sure what h.w. stands for.

Everything works flawlessly. I can use any input method on either device, and get the desired results.

Regards,

Michel

sorry h.w is normally h/w - typo on my part. In any case thanx Ken for clarifying it.

Michel, reading the doc on iTeleport touchscreen mode would help the mouse tracking which is not so good with RD - I'll have to see if it has an equivalent mode in the Android app. When you say iPad keyboard I assume you mean the one that pops up on screen. That worked fine on my Galaxy Tab 3 also and I was able to have the laptop Acc do a search. The mismatch I was talking about though was that I was trying to use gestures on the tablet, for example to scroll the text in the search pane of Acc and it would have no effect. I had to go to the scroll bar and slide it which of course worked fine. I was wondering if iTeleport had anything that helped with that. I would have thought that such interface translation would be a bit tricky - or very tricky - or maybe not even possible.

thx

Cool - that may be a significant advantage of iT.

I'll have to poke about a bit more to see if anything free offers that kind of gesture support.

What is the Windows version on your Windows box ?

Thx

Thanx Michel. I'm on 7. Waiting for 10, gonna jump 8.

In any case, the RD app is not so crash hot for scrolling and such and clicking buttons on the PC. It renders the mouse pointer where ever it is and you have to make sure that's where you locate you finger or when you tap somewhere you get a surprise because the click occurs at the location of the mouse pointer, not your finger. Very odd. Then there is a two finger scroll capability which works but only just - scrolling is very slow. Overall not good translation of one control paradigm onto another. I found another RDP client though that is way better called aFreeRDP. Installs very simple on Android and can then at as a decent remote desktop client and gestures there are fully working. Click on various buttons, two finger scroll in Acc, triple click on words causes correct look up from Greek text to BDAG. Cut and paste and so on is doable but a little more involed.

So gesture translation support is a big deal. If well done that would be worth paying for.

Then there is security.

Thx

D

Now the best of both worlds even has the same number: Windows and iOS 8.1

Daniel, I guess you shouldn't have skipped Windows 8 :)

Daniel Semler,

concerning Windows 8 (and 8.1) I agree with you!

I tried Windows 8 on my notebook but I was never able to find the right drivers for my switchable graphics configurations, and my notebook continued to overheat as long as Windows 8 was running on it. After, about month of Windows 8.1 I went back to Windows 7. I hope Windows 9 or rather version 10 will be be as good or better than Windows 7. If, not I am thinking I might get a Mac Book Pro next time around.

Quite honestly a quick tweak to the Apple EULA and a little more pluggability with respect to drivers would change the playing field immeasurably.

Thx

Hi,

I just happened to load TeamViewer on an Android device and was so impressed that I'm switching from iTeleport to TeamViewer for rapid reading.

First, in Android or iOS you can go into Settings > Screen resolution > Don't change and have the same resolution.

Second, it supports one finger scrolling. I always found the two finger scrolling in iTeleport a bit jerky and hard to control. Scrolling is easier, faster, just better in TeamViewer.

Third, it works on Blackberry, with all the built in security.

Anyways, you can also have the best of both worlds with an Android device, and even with a Blackberry.

Regards,

Michel

TeamViewer gestures don't work in Chrome in Android or iOS. Could be a Windows 10 thing.
