As the Anchor Yale Bible Commentary is a particularly large set of commentaries, we added the Old Testament/Apocrypha volumes in free installments as we completed them. All OT & Apocrypha modules have been released. All NT modules with the exception of Matthew have already been released.

See this article for even more information about the Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries.

The Anchor Yale Bible is a project of international and interfaith scope in which Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish scholars from many countries contribute individual volumes. The project is not sponsored by any ecclesiastical organization and is not intended to reflect any particular theological doctrine.

The Anchor Yale Bible is committed to producing commentaries in the tradition established half a century ago by the founders of the series, William Foxwell Albright and David Noel Freedman. It aims to present the best contemporary scholarship in a way that is accessible not only to scholars but also to the educated nonspecialist. Its approach is grounded in exact translation of the ancient languages and an appreciation of the historical and cultural context in which the biblical books were written supplemented by insights from modern methods, such as sociological and literary criticism.

This commentary set covers:

  • Entire Old Testament and Apocrypha with the exception of Deuteronomy 12-34 (60 volumes).
  • Entire New Testament with an additional second edition of First Corinthians (26 volumes)

This series although yet to be competed (and some replacement volumes are being worked on) is over all a must to own for any serious student of the Bible. There are volumes (in my unlearned opinion) that border on next to useless, but that being said the majority are very helpful and some approach a worth of priceless in my mind. Every series will have it's stronger and weaker volumes this one is no different but there is without doubt more "grain than chaff". The Apocrypha section Anchor Bible covers not only the catholic deuterocanon but also the books of 1 + 2 Esdras (sometimes referred to as Ezra 3, 4, 5, 6; 2 Esdras having a Christian preface and postscript added to the Jewish book known as 4th Ezra). And while I would not personally put this set ahead of my favourites-- New Interpreter's Bible & Word Biblical Commentary series, this series definitely should not be over looked by any who wish to study the Bible and complements the above two series mentioned nicely.
