“’Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:26–27, NIV)
Back in the early nineties, I remember sitting in a seminary class where I made a comment about the above passage, “I wish I had a recording of that entire discussion.” The professor said that while we obviously don’t have a recording of Jesus’ original exposition of the Old Testament (the entirety of the Scriptures at the time), we do have the testimony of the New Testament writers who regularly interacted with the Old Testament to explain how they foretold the coming of the Messiah. This is true, but I still wish I had that recording!
Released today for the Accordance Library, The Gospel According to the Old Testament series (18 volumes) from P&R Publishing, began with an unfinished book by the late Raymond Dillard (d. 1993). Tremper Longman III and J. Alan Groves lightly edited a finished draft of what would become Faith in the Face of Apostasy: The Gospel According to Elijah and Elisha (1999) and launched the series The Gospel According to the Old Testament (GAOT). Iain M. Duguid is the current editor.
GAOT has three aims:
- to lay out the pervasiveness of the revelation of Christ in the Old Testament
- to promote a Christ-centered reading of the Old Testament
- to encourage Christ-centered preaching and teaching from the Old Testament

Each volume is an individual Old Testament Christology covering a theme and/or individual of the Hebrew Scriptures. The series is not aimed at scholars, but rather at pastors and laypeople. Some volumes treat a biblical chapter at a time and are thus more expositional, while others present a more thematic approach to the study. Although the writers do occasionally interact with the original languages, Hebrew and Greek words are transliterated, making these discussions accessible to a wider audience.
Accordance users can obtain The Gospel According to the Old Testament series as a bundle of 18 individual volumes. The listing of the titles below includes links to a handful of reviews and a supplement available to Accordance users who own the Theological Journal Library.
