UBSC Deut cover ds For years, Accordance users have profited from the insights and scholarship found in the New Testament volumes of the Understanding the Bible Commentary Series (formerly titled The New International Biblical Commentary) for personal research, private study, and sermon preparation. Now we are pleased to announce the release of the Old Testament companion volumes for the UBCS. These additions bring the current 18 volumes to a total of 36 to incorporate into your Accordance Library.

These new volumes add the biblical analysis of renowned Old Testament scholars like Tremper Longman III, John Goldingay, and Elizabeth Achtemeier to New Testament favorites like F. F. Bruce, Gordon Fee, and Craig A. Evans — all in one incredible commentary series! Many Accordance users already own the UBCS New Testament volumes and will want to upgrade to the complete series.

What distinguishes the UBCS from other commentary series? Two very important features.

First, the writers claim that they follow neither a precritical nor an anticritical approach to interpreting Scripture. In the preface, the editors describe their approach in this way:

Instead, as its editors, we have sought to align this series with what has been labeled believing criticism. This approach marries probing, reflective interpretation of the text to loyal biblical devotion and warm Christian affection. Our contributors tackle the task of interpretation using the full range of critical methodologies and practices. Yet they do so as people of faith who hold the text in the highest regard. The commentators in this series use criticism to bring the message of the biblical texts vividly to life so the minds of modern readers may be illumined and their faith deepened […] The authors in this series combine a firm commitment to modern scholarship with a similar commitment to the Bible’s full authority for Christians.

Second, and as with all Accordance titles, our developers have painstakingly gone over the content of this series and carefully tagged all of the text according to the following 11 search fields: Reference, Titles, English Content, NIV Quotations, Scripture, Hebrew Content, Transliteration, Manuscripts, Bibliography, Authors, and Page Numbers. This allows the user to more accurately search all 36 volumes of the UBCS for the exact content necessary for study, research, or proclamation!
