One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received - & I think it holds especially true as we endeavor to dive into Christian theology & doctrine - is to "Absorb what's useful...& discard the rest." IMHO - for less than $90, there's a LOT that's useful here! I much prefer for every author to be up front & forthcoming with what they personally believe vs. attempting to disguise their doctrine or dogma by creating the illusion of objectivity. For Bible scholars grounded in their theological & doctrinal beliefs through unbiased exegesis of God's Word...this really should be a non-issue.

Really...relative to this or ANY other dictionary, commentary, study Bible, theological journal, lexicon, or apparatus...give it a try! "Absorb what's useful & discard the rest!" :)

At a sale price of $89.99, I thought this would be a no-brainer addition to my Accordance, but I'd have to say that I'm very disappointed with this work. The title "Encyclopedia of the Bible" implies a treasury of facts and data and illustration.

As much as these are present, it is dripping with interpretation, doctrine and dogma. It is far less a scholarly resource than a rather presumptuous trove of Nicean apologetics.

If you need somebody to tell you what they think the Bible means and give you their interpretation of everything in it, you'll likely be quite satisfied with this purchase. If, on the other hand, you want a purely factual, contextual reference of the Bible, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

I've been a head pastor 14 years now, and I use this reference probably more than any other. It's a great source to explain raw facts and to get what all the Bible says on any particular topic.
