The Complete Biblical Library was a remarkably ambitious undertaking involving over 500 Bible scholars and researchers. It took over 20 years to produce an exhaustive reference set, unlike any other. The result was a multi-volume library detailing the entire Bible, blending all study tools into one series.

This product contains

  • The Old Testament Study Bible (covering all 39 books of the Old Testament) (CBL OT Study Bible)
  • The Old Testament Hebrew-English Dictionary (CBL Hebrew Dictionary)
  • The New Testament Study Bible (covering all 27 books of the New Testament plus Harmony of the Gospels) (CBL NT Study Bible)
  • The New Testament Greek-English Dictionary (CBL Greek Dictionary)

Features of the Study Bibles: The Study Bibles are a combination of study materials which will help both scholar and layperson achieve a better understanding of the Old and New Testament and their languages. All of these helps are available in various forms elsewhere, but bringing them together in combination will save many hours of research. Many scholars do not have in their personal libraries all the volumes necessary to provide the information so readily available here.

The Study Bible volumes contain an encyclopedic survey of the particular Old and New Testament book being treated. Each survey provides a general outline; discusses matters which may have several opinions; and, provides background information regarding the history, culture, literature, and philosophy of the era covered by the book. Various sources for the Hebrew and Greek text are listed within the Study Bible volumes. A verse-by-verse commentary that is useful for a basic understanding of every Old and New Testament verse is then included. Finally, nearly 60 various Bible translations are interspersed throughout the Old and New Testament text in addition to the complete King James Version text, to show how different phrases have been translated over the years.

Features of the Dictionaries: The Complete Biblical Library Hebrew-English Dictionary (HED) and Greek-English Dictionary (GED) are, by themselves, unique tools. They provide information the user could not obtain without consulting several lexical and theological books. Here all the basic information is available, saving a great deal of research time for students, ministers and scholars. The HED and GED are conjoint with the Study Bibles. They interweave by the numerical system which identifies each Hebrew and Greek word. The appropriate number can be found in the Dictionary, which lists the words in numerical and alphabetical order. By this system, a person may easily go from the Study Bible to an in-depth study in the Dictionary and vice versa. Such an arrangement makes these dictionaries useful for the layperson as well as the scholar.

Note: Print editions of the Complete Biblical Library include additional content. The CBL Greek grammar is in development and will be added at a later date. The CBL Gospel parallels and CBL Interlinear did not add extra value over similar material already included in Accordance, so we do not have plans to release these two components for Accordance.

This work which took over 20 years to produce by a team of international scholars is a most valuable resource. The "study Bible" portion is as some have called it like a study Bible on steroids. Often times approach a level of comment you might see in a Bible commentary. I consider the Study Bible portion of these series a solid 3 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ . I give it that rating because more often than I would like you will come on areas where the commentary has become a little too thrifty with the verbiage but most of the time you do have a generous comment full of pastoral insight, import historical insight and pointing out many things lost in translation. This brings me to another wonderful feature in the "Study Bible" section. The expanded translation which starts of course with the traditional KJV but then adds in important insights from over 40 translations, including not only "evangelical" favourites but versions often scene as more controversial like the RSV, REB, JB, NEB and NRSV. ...

Moving on to the dictionaries. I consider them a 5 star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ . They are exceptionally informative and I believe offer some of the best depth that is easily accessible to laity. That said I have talked to clergy who find them invaluable too. I would place the over all viewpoint of this series as moderate "evangelical". This will not replace a good multivolume commentary but it likely will find much use in your Library and may well be one of the first resources you turn to in your study of a passage.
