The books in this series present a summary of how scholars have interpreted the Greek or Hebrew text. This series will help students and translators who have beginning to advanced exegetical skills to produce a meaningful translation.

Each volume in the Exegetical Summaries series works through the original text phrase by phrase. English equivalents are provided for all Hebrew and Greek words, making this an excellent reference for exegetes of all levels.

Questions that occur to exegetes as they study the text are stated and then answered by summarizing the ways many scholars have interpreted the text. This information should help translators or students in making their own exegetical decisions.

As a basis for discussion, a semi-literal translation of the text is given. The first question to be answered is the meaning of key words in context. Information from standard lexicons is given and then translations of the word are cited from a dozen major Bible versions and from commentaries that offer their own translations of the text.

Questions about the grammar and discourse structure of the original languages are answered by summarizing the views of many commentators. When exegetical disagreements appear in the commentaries and versions, the various interpretations are listed.

This series is not intended to replace the commentaries that are consulted. Rather than being a stand-alone commentary, this book summarizes many important details of exegesis that should be considered in studying the biblical text.

For any teacher or pastor, SIL Exegetical Summaries are absolutely essential. I use these resources every time I prepare a lecture or sermon. There are two primary benefits for these resources. First, they give you all the questions that you should be asking as you study any particular text. Rarely, do I consult them and they do not have the question or answers to my questions. Secondly, they do not give you one answer but the range of legitimate answers to any given question. If your conclusion is not in the summary, then you better have a good reason for having a unique answer. As a side note, I especially enjoy the conciseness. Some commentaries ramble on and on with different possibilities. It takes a long time before you can really identify the answer as to what the specific position of that particular commentator. SIL commentaries cut through the slog. If you are on the fence, buy this series. You will not be disappointed. I have the print version and also the e version on Accordance. I would not recommend the print version as this is just a quick resource. Buy it on a Bible app… Accordance.

If I had to choose just one resource for Accordance the SIL Exegetical Summary Series would be it. The series is so versatile having excellent identification of key terms, grammatical notations, gathered comments from major commentary sets, on top of all that are some very insightful questions regarding the text. The set becomes even more powerful if you own several other resources in Accordance because of the hyperlinking to those resources. It’s a “must buy.”
