Tremper Longman III is an Old Testament scholar, theologian, professor, and an award-winning author.  His writing style and unique communication skills help one to connect with the Bible with both mind and heart. Well organized and informative, these new releases from Accordance offer a strategy to follow, discoveries to be made, application with which to connect, and important principles of interpretation for better understanding.

This bundle contains the following works:

  • How to Read Genesis: In order to read Genesis intelligently, we must consider the questions, the literature, and the times in which Genesis was written. In How to Read Genesis, Longman provides a welcome guide to reading and studying, understanding and savoring this panorama of beginnings -- of both the world and of Israel.
  • How to Read Exodus: Without the book of Exodus, the Bible would lack three early scenes: deliverance, covenant, and worship. Longman provides a box-seat guide to Exodus, discussing its historical backdrop, sketching out its literary context, and developing its principal themes.
  • How to Read Job: We often turn to the book of Job when we encounter suffering. We look for an explanation for the questions “Why me?” or “Why her?” But what if it turns out that although Job does suffer, the book is not really about his suffering?
  • How to Read Proverbs: Proverbs are memorable capsules of wisdom, chiseled in words and polished through use by those who have traveled that path ahead of us. But the proverbs of the Bible are woven into the web of divine revelation and rooted in the 'fear of the Lord' that is the beginning of wisdom. In How to Read Proverbs, Longman provides insight into how Christ is the climax and embodiment of wisdom.

I am a layman who leads a community Bible study from a Reformed perspective. I found these books very helpful. In fact, I would put them on my short list of most helpful books I have ever read. For years I struggled trying to understand the Book of Job. I have at least 4 commentaries (very good ones), but none of them really described the genre in which Job was written. Finally, I think that I understand what the Book of Job is teaching. I cannot recommend these books strongly enough.
