The New Interpreter’s Study Bible brings the best of biblical scholarship to the service of the Church. In this new edition based on The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible with Apocrypha, sixty distinguished scholars have provided background and insight on the biblical text. Features include extensive historical and theological annotations on the biblical text; brief introductions and outlines for each biblical book; excursuses giving further background and insight regarding particular themes and passages; and nineteen commissioned maps detailing the biblical world at various historical periods.

NOTE: While the print version of The New Interpreter’s Study Bible contains the text of the New Revised Standard Version with the Apocrypha, this module does not contain the actual biblical text. This module does contain the notes, outlines, maps, glossary, and chronologies of the printed version. The Study Bible Notes of this module are formatted to run in parallel with any Accordance Bible translation (including the NRSV.)

This study Bible is in many ways quite unique. The notes it has come to the text in many ways, offering historic insights, theological insights, as well as the occasional application. It comes to the text from a progressive background but usually ends up with solid historically orthodox conclusions. And while I may think the New Oxford Annotated Bible is slightly more important, one can not overlook what one of the former editors of the NOAB had to say about NISB (which was after the 3rd Edition of the NOAB had been released): "Of the current editions of Study Bibles, in my opinion the most helpful for pastors, teachers, and all students of the Scriptures has now been issued by Abingdon Press under the dedicated guidance of Dr. Walter Harrelson." - Bruce M. Metzger, Professor of New Testament, Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary
